A Proof of Education Letter confirms where and how a former student was educated in Ontario.
- A Proof of Education in English Letter is often needed if you have moved to Quebec and want to register your child in an English-language elementary school.
- A Proof of Education in French Letter is often needed if you attended French Immersion and want to register your child in a French-language elementary school.
What the Letter Includes
The letter is based on information from the student’s Ontario Student Record (OSR). It will include information for each school the student attended in Ontario, such as:
- The name of the school attended
- The associated school board
- The grades the student attended
- The dates the student attended
- The main language of instruction at the school
How to Request a Letter
To request a Proof of Education Letter:
- Complete the Proof of Education in English or French request form
- Submit the form along with valid proof of ID
Fees and Processing Time
- The cost is $5.00 per letter
- Letter requests may take up to 10 business days to process
- During busy times, it may take a little longer.
Sending Letters to Multiple Addresses
If you’d like your letter mailed to more than one address:
- Write “See attached list” on your form
- Include the full mailing addresses in your email when you submit your form and ID
Sending a Letter to a School or School Board
If you are asking for your letter to be sent directly to a school or school board:
- Include the full mailing address
- Add the name of the department or contact person where the letter is to be directed
- If the school accepts a scanned copy while they wait for the mailed version, include the school contact’s email address
In compliance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, the Records Centre is not permitted to release any student information over the phone, or without explicit consent from the named individual.
