What is ESL in Ontario?
English as a Second Language (ESL) is a support program for students in Grades 1 to 8 whose first language is not English. These students are also referred to as English Language Learners (ELLs) or Multilingual Learners (MLLs). ESL supports help students build English skills while participating in the Ontario curriculum.
Support in Schools
- Integrated Support Model
Language support is provided within the regular classroom. The classroom teacher and a Multilanguage Resource Coach (MRC) work together to adapt instruction based on the student’s needs. - Individualized Support
MRC teachers support educators and students with vocabulary, reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Support may include small-group instruction, targeted lessons, or one-on-one help.

- Build confidence communicating in English
- Understand curriculum content while learning English
- Develop skills across reading, writing, speaking, and listening
- Participate in school life socially and academically
Assessment
Students who are new to Ontario or who are beginning English instruction may take part in a language assessment. This helps schools better understand each student’s English proficiency and identify the most appropriate supports, while ensuring students are placed in an age-appropriate grade.
Curriculum Expectations
ESL and ELD supports are aligned with the Ontario curriculum. Students work toward the same learning goals as their peers with strategies that support language development.
Who Receives Support
Students may receive ESL or ELD support if they are new to Ontario, learning English, or returning after time away from English instruction.
